Learning toileting skills takes practice and patience. The NHS guide covers when to begin, preparation and five steps to build confidence.
Make the routine familiar
- Read a potty story, use a toy to show what happens and practise sitting comfortably.
- Choose clothes that are easy to pull up and down, with spare clothes ready for accidents.
- Build regular opportunities to use the potty or toilet into the day, rather than waiting for your child to ask every time.
- Praise the effort of trying. When accidents happen, respond calmly and help your child get comfortable again.
Work together, at your child’s pace
Talk to the nursery about the words and routines you use at home. Children with additional needs may need extra time or adaptations.
If your child seems constipated, has painful poos or you are concerned about progress, ask your health visitor or GP for advice. Start with the complete NHS potty-training guide, including its advice on when to begin.
