It can feel frustrating when a familiar meal is suddenly refused. Toddlers often hesitate over new foods, and their preferences can change.

Keep the table a friendly place

  • Offer small portions and give your child time. Try eating together so they can see you enjoying food too.
  • If a food is refused, stay calm and offer it again another day. Avoid forcing a taste.
  • Talk about your day, rather than making every conversation about how much has been eaten.
  • Keep offering variety. Avoid using sweets or other foods as a reward for eating.

Share what matters with the nursery

Tell the team about allergies, dietary requirements and any agreed feeding advice. You can find Jan’s published information on our food and menus page and food allergies page.

For persistent concerns about eating or growth, speak to your health visitor or GP. The NHS fussy-eating guide offers further practical suggestions.
