Some evenings are easier than others. Children have different sleep patterns, and a routine should fit your child and your family.

Make the next step predictable

  • Choose a short, calming sequence you can repeat: brushing teeth, changing for bed, a story and saying goodnight.
  • Keep bedtime activities quiet and familiar. The NHS suggests avoiding phones, tablets and laptops for 30–60 minutes before bed.
  • Try to follow a similar routine each evening, giving a new approach time to become familiar.

When you need more support

If sleep is becoming difficult for your child or your family, speak to your health visitor. Children with disabilities or long-term conditions may need a more individual approach.

Share changes in sleep or routines with the nursery team so you can talk about how your child is feeling during the day. Read the NHS advice on sleep and young children for more ideas and support.
