Life at Jan

Admissions

This admission policy applies to our Leyton / Vicarage Road nursery.

Admission Policy:

At Jan Preschool and Nursery, we facilitate learning and care for 43 children between the ages of 1 and 5. We are open 51 weeks for all children and 38 weeks (coinciding with Waltham Forest school holidays) for funded-only children. We are closed only for Bank Holidays.

Our opening hours:

8:00 – 6:00 full time including breakfast, lunch and teatime meal.

Part-time morning sessions are:

8:30 – 11:30 (3 hours) for the children attending every day.

8:00 – 1:00 (half day – 5 hours, including lunchtime)

Part-time afternoon sessions are:

1:00 – 4:00 (3 hours) for the children attending every day.

1:00 – 6:00 (5 hours, including mealtime)

We added flexible hours to provide 30 hours of government-funded care over 3 days for 38 weeks – 8:30 to 2:30.

Our Learning Spaces:

The classrooms are divided into three groups:

  • Babies (under two) – 15 spaces, three rooms on the first floor
  • Toddlers (two to three years old) – 20 spaces
  • Preschool (three to five years old) – 8 spaces

We also have a large play area at the back. All children go out together to play in the garden.

Our Preschool room is limited to only eight spaces due to our room size. Therefore, we prioritise children who are attending for 51 weeks. We advise all our parents to confirm their child’s preschool spaces with us after they turn two years old.

The sessions for 15 hours of free funded places are 8:30 – 11:30 and 13:00 – 16:00 every day.

The numbers and ages of children admitted to the nursery comply with the legal space requirements set out in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

We take the following matters into account when prioritising and deciding on admissions:

  • Availability of places, taking into account the staff-to-child ratios, the age of the child and any registration requirements
  • Children who have siblings who are already with us
  • When the application is received (extra weight is given to those who have been on the waiting list the longest)
  • The nursery's ability to provide the facilities necessary for the welfare of the child, including appropriate staffing arrangements
  • A child requiring a full-time place may have preference over one requiring a part-time place. This is dependent upon work commitments, occupancy and room availability
  • Any extenuating circumstances affecting the child's welfare or the welfare of his/her family.

All children are required to attend at least three days a week to maintain our continuous learning and adaptation of the nursery routines.

We operate an inclusion and equality policy and ensure that all children have access to nursery places and services, regardless of their gender, race, disability, religion or belief, or parents' sexual orientation.

Before a child attends nursery, parents must complete and sign a contract and registration form. These forms provide the nursery with the child's personal details. For example, name, date of birth, address, emergency contact details, parental responsibilities, dietary requirements, fees and sessions, parent contact details, doctor's contact details, health visitor contact details, allergies, parental consent, and vaccinations.

Providers eligible to provide government-funded places for early education

All settings registered to accept government funding (detailed in the code of practice) must offer free places for two- to five-year-olds for early learning sessions specified by the local authority. At Jan Preschool and Nursery, we currently provide free funded places, subject to availability. Please note that for admissions to the free nursery education, we have a termly intake, beginning the term following your child’s second or third birthday.

We reserve a limited number of places for children who can attend the Preschool for just 15 hours a week using their free entitlement. They do not need to pay for any consumable resources or meals. We only charge £10 snack money each month, or children can bring their own fruit from home so the parents don't need to pay anything.

All funded sessions now follow the flexible arrangement specified by the Government. When you register your child for a funded place, we will discuss your needs and, as far as possible with availability and staffing arrangements, accommodate your wishes.
