You do not need a lesson plan to enjoy language together. Everyday conversations, songs and shared books give children chances to listen, respond and join in.
Try it in an ordinary moment
- At the shops or while getting dressed, name what your child notices and talk about what you are doing.
- With a picture book, follow their pointing and talk about the pictures. You do not have to finish every page.
- Sing familiar action songs, repeat favourite words and leave time for your child to respond.
- Build on what they say: if they say “car”, you could reply “a red car”. Keep it playful, without correcting or testing them.

Use the language or languages that feel natural in your family. The NHS encourages families to talk in whichever language they feel comfortable using.
