A new place and new people can bring big feelings. Being upset at goodbye is common in young children; it does not mean you have done anything wrong.
Help the new feel familiar
- Try brief periods with a trusted adult, building up gradually.
- Talk simply about where you are going and what you will do together afterwards.
- Keep your goodbye warm and confident. Ask the nursery whether a familiar comfort item would be suitable.
A conversation before the first day
Tell the team what comforts your child, the words they use at home and anything they find difficult. Ask how settling-in visits work, what to bring and how to check in after drop-off. These are useful questions to agree with your chosen nursery.
If distress is intense, lasts a long time after you leave or continues for several weeks, speak to your health visitor. Read the NHS separation anxiety guidance for more support.
